GENERAL BACKGROUND ON SADCMET COMPARISONS

SADCMET was a recognized regional metrology organization (RMO) under the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) between National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) facilitated by the International Committee of Weights and Measures (CIPM) until about 2008, when it agreed to transfer this role to the newly constituted African umbrella organization AFRIMETS. It now functions as a subregional metrology organization under AFRIMETS.

As spelt out in its Aims, Objectives and Functions, SADCMET is also a recognized structure of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

In line with these responsibilities, SADCMET organizes subregional measurement comparisons, to enable the NMIs in SADC to prove their competence and thus attain international recognition through either accreditation, the CIPM MRA or both. Depending on their level of expertise and facilities, SADCMET NMIS can also sometimes acquire this essential evidence by participating in comparisons organized by AFRIMETS or by other RMOs or even through CIPM comparisons.

While the comparison results of those SADCMET members, which are signatories of the CIPM MRA, are captured and displayed in the BIPM intercomparison database established under the CIPM MRA, the results of the other members are not captured and documented in this way.

In order to remedy this situation and give its members, who have not yet signed the CIPM MRA, an opportunity to use their comparison results for other purposes - for example for accrediation or internal documentation, SADCMET has captured and is displaying these results on its website.

SADCMET and AFRIMETS comparison data captured in the BIPM key comparison database can be accessed through submenu "CIPM"

SADCMET and AFRIMETS comparison data, particularly those of members who are not signatories of the CIPM MRA, and the results of earlier non-registered pilot comparisons can be accessed through submenu "SADCMET".
